Project:Monasticon Hibernicum database/Bibliography
General
The raw data we are working with can be summarised as follows.
The publications
All sources - secondary and to a lesser extent, primary - are identified through the use of shorthands, e.g. 'Charles-Edwards 2000'. Barring omissions and inconsistencies, the publications to which they refer are clarified in the bibliography on the website.
The following steps are needed to transform this system :
- Create Wikibase items for each publication, along with their shorthands, so that they can be uniquely identified and linked to
- Isolate and extract all shorthands used in the OpenRefine spreadsheet of the database
- Reconcile each shorthand in the spreadsheet with the relevant Wikibase instance.
Relevant columns
- Bibliography: uses shorthands to refer to publications listed under 'Secondary sources'; on rarer occasions to sources listed under 'Primary sources'. There are many cases in which the intended publication is unclear or unknown.
- Sources: uses shorthands to refer to sources listed under 'primary sources'
- Example:
Bk.Arm 13b 1 (Tírechán: Senach, Mathona); Trip.Life 112; Mart.T; Mart.G; Mart.D (Máelán); LL 353; BB 119b; Colgan, Acta 94, 137-8, 271 (Fáilbe); Triadis, 204 (if Cell F.)
- Example:
- Recorded History

1. Create items for publications
Primary sources
See separately, /Primary sources.
Secondary sources
- extracted and organised into a spreadsheet
- re-parsed to create multiple columns (title, year, type of publication, etc.)

2. Isolate shorthands
All shorthands have been isolated from the text in relevant columns, making it possible to link them up to references in the Wikibase instance. Some manual fixing was necessary but overall the use of punctuation (semi-colons, commas) to separate references was quite consistent and helpful.
3. Reconciliation
Progress: A–W.
The following shorthands are used in the bibliographic sections but could not be automatically resolved to their identifiers. A variety of reasons may account for this: typos, inconsistencies, omissions, etc. In some cases the reference may be to a source given under 'Primary sources', such as 'Plummer 1910', which likely refers to the two volumes of his Vitae sanctorum Hiberniae.
