The material

  • The publications listed under primary sources have been extracted and put into a spreadsheet.
  • Multiple columns refer to primary sources by a shorthand:
    • Sources - many references to manuscripts, martyrologies, etc.
    • Recorded History - focused on historical sources
    • Succession Record
    • ...
  • Presumably most of the abbreviations given in the columns are listed under https://monasticon.celt.dias.ie/abbrevs.php, without the editions and translations on which the citations are based. The latter are found in the bibliography, without corresponding abbreviations.

Strategy

Thoughts

Primary sources are more complicated than publications listed under secondary sources because they group together two different things: (a) the actual source, which may be a text, a manuscript or even a multiplicity of them, and (b) the publication in which an edition and/or translation is found. In the case of MonHib, we might find the same publication under both categories, e.g. CGH as a primary source (a genealogical one from one of the MSS edited but leaving unspecified which specific source is being cited) and then 'notes and indexes to CGH' as a secondary source.

In LOD repositories, the convention is to decouple source and publication first and create separate items.

  • Example here: Item:Q4681 (Amra Senáin) and Item:Q3349 (Breatnach's edition of the text), which links to the text through a property 'Contains edition of text'.

The next step is to work out how to re-couple source and publication cited so that they can be citable together.

  • The laborious option:
    • Create additional items of type 'primary source' in which source and publication are paired.
    • Objection: it is laborious.
  • The qualifier option:
    • Option 1: cite the source and cite the publication with a qualifier. This offers no solution when the source cannot be made specific enough (on the level of a data item).
    • Option 2: cite the publication and use the source as a qualifier.
    • General objection: qualifiers add complexity, can be cumbersome, and would be unusable if the citation is already part of a qualifier.
  • The implicit option:
    • Cite the publication and where specific sources are named, deduce possible source from link in item if any.
    • Issue: potentially ambiguous.
    • Think how to best distinguish 'cite as primary source' from 'cite as secondary source'?
  • The flat option:
    • Cite both source and publication together.

Creating separate entries for individual texts within collections

  • VSH: individual lives will have separate identifiers to refer to.

    • VSH (Colum T'glass) and VSH (Colum) - unless I missed it there is no life of the saint (Colum of Terryglass) in VSH. Heist's VSH from Cod. Salm. may be intended; or possibly the lfe of Finnian of Clonard.

General comments

  • Delineating information into items with corresponding bibliographic records is much more challenging for this column. Most of the time we can rely on the semi-colon, but in a lot of cases, references need to be inspected manually and interpreted. The occasional human error (omissions, semi-colons being used for other purposes, etc.) is not even the biggest concern. Especially in the case of annals, sources can be grouped together. [...]

References to annals

General comment: if the Irish annals project is going ahead, most of the issues raised below should no longer matter.

It is not always clear if the events recorded, esp. acts of burning and plundering, are to be understood to refer to specific annalistic sources, or wider coverage in the annals.

  • In the following case, it looks quite clear: Ann.Ult 1116 (bnd)1185 (pl., bnd); Ann.FM pl. 1015; bnd: 1081, 1084, 1142, 1154, 1155; Ann.FM 1050 (Council at); Chtr c.1200 (Kildelo) - see also clerics - because we already have similar records for Ann.Ult (1116, 1185), the other events in 1081, 1084, 1142, 1154, 1155 should probably be assigned to Ann.FM.

Royal visitations

Roy.Visit.Pprs = Royal Visitation Papers

  • evidently refers to the Royal visitations from 1607 onwards (see e.g. "Seventeenth century regal visitations"), but I do not know of any general source in which the materials are edited as a whole.
  • Maybe the Calendar of State Papers, but material relating to the 1615 visitation is edited separately in Arch. Hib. 8 (1941).
  • Maybe it is BL MS Add. 19836 = Liber regalia visitationis (https://virtualtreasury.ie/item/BL-Betham-Add-MS-19836).
  • For now, semi-resolved as Item:Q4979.

Ecclesiastical taxations, valuations

  • 'Tax' = according to the list of abbreviations, this refers to the 'Papal Taxation 1302–06' (elsewhere written c.1302-06 / 1302-07)
    • It is not identified under 'primary sources' but the common reference work is Sweetman, Calendar of documents relating to Ireland, vol. 5: 1302-1307, pp. ?202ff = now Item:Q4965. Sweetman had copied the records from Exchequer rolls (PRO) and reproduced them in English in tabular form.
    • However, many of the references are to years prior to 1302. E.g. 'Tax 1219' (3x), 'Tax 1260 (Kilsilan, dioc Lismore)', 'Tax 1291 (in Críchad an Chaoilli)', etc. What are we to make of this? Are we understand that previous volumes of CDI were used here?
    • Bruce Campbell notes in one article that "the Irish returns for 1291 are missing. Instead, what survive are the returns from a corresponding tax levied in 1303–6, by which time the yield of all other Irish taxes and royal revenues had fallen substantially from their level in 1290/1", represented in figure 1.
Papal taxation of 1291 (1291-1300?)

At first sight, it may seem possible that the shorthand 'Tax 1291' is occasionally used in MonHib for the general historical reason that the papal tenths began with Pope Nicholas IV in 1291. But a clear distinction is drawn in refs like 'Tax 1291, 1302-06'.

  • 'Tax 1291' is used most frequently. Some possible variants:
  • 'Tax 1291 (Bregoge)' - cf. https://www.logainm.ie/en/11682
  • 'Tax 1291-1300: Eccia de Killelby' - cf. Mary Hickson
  • 'Tax 1292 (Achlyskmolaga)' - mentioned in e.g. Clerical and parochial records of Cork, Cloyne and Ross [1591?].

What do they have in common?

  • All relate to the eccl. province of Cashel. Nearly all to the diocese of Cloyne. The one exception is Áth Cró (dioc. Cashel).
  • Most refer, in the bibliography column, to Brady's 'Clerical and parochial records of Cork, Cloyne and Ross'.

P.S.

  • Mary Hickson, in her many "Notes on Kerry", say she used a 'Papal Taxation of 1291(-?1300)' from PRO, containing a portion relating to Ardfert.

Any connection with the taxation of the diocese of Dublin (connected with the Cathedral of St Patrick and Priory of the Holy Trinity). The Taxatio diocesis Dublin(iensis) is in the archives of Christ Church Cathedral = probably https://virtualtreasury.ie/item/PROI-M-3-150 (see Deeds of Christ Church), which similarly covers Taney. But then difficult to tell why MonHib would cite 'Tax 1294' for Ballytrustan, Co. Down.

Create dedicated identifiers

  • Lis (Críchad an Chaoilli) - many of the references to the Book of Lismore are specifically to its text of the topographical tract Críchad an Chaoilli. It seems worthwhile to create a dedicated entity for this text. Reconciled with Power's edition of the text (incl. in bibliography).
    • @todo Cell Laisre has 'Lis 14b?'. There happens to be a reference to 'Cill Laisre' in the Críchad text so maybe 14b is wrong?
  • Of the Llanthony charters, 'Lhanthony Cart. c.1182' is most frequent and may be deserve a dedicared item.
