Project:Monasticon Hibernicum database/Baronies

• Wikidata had two 'bogus' baronies in NI. I have corrected both entries.

Status

In progress. Done: A-W, but some tasks remaining:

• Some items skipped for now. See below,
• Multiple values: only the first one added so far.
• Confidence markers not yet added. Question marks can be added to a new column and translated to a confidence marker in the schema. Except where question marks are part of an array.

Arrays

• Arrays: for now, reconcile the first one only.
  • incl. "Balrothery E/W?" => Balrothery East, added Balrothery West later and assign a confidence marker.

Special cases

• bar. Ballymore, Cork: going to assume here that bar. Barrymore, Cork (https://www.logainm.ie/en/10399), which also includes the townland Ballymore.
• Single r vs double r, e.g. read Carberry as Carbery
• Array with just a space: Clonlisk? Ballybritt?
• Cell Bruaine (par. Kilbroney) has Iveagh Upr, reconciled as "Iveagh Upper (Upper Half)".
• Bó-chluain : MonHib has "Maryborough"; Clonenagh and Clonagheen (logainm) is in three different baronies today (Cullenagh, Maryborough East and Maryborough West). @todo : I'm adding "Maryborough East" for now and should add "Maryborough West" later on.
• Cuilenn, diocese of Glendalough, is located in "Dublin?" (question mark), in the barony of "Rathdown". This reads like the barony of Rathdown in Dublin is tentatively preferred over the barony in Wicklow.

Cities and towns

When it comes to sites in/near cities and towns, the "barony" column can have some information that needs to be interpreted. Some of these refer to boroughs and municipal districts, which may constitute a category in their own right. A case could be made for having an additional property like "district" to provide a more precision to the location.

For now, the following translations have been made:

• "Cork and Municipal Borough" has been reconciled as "barony of Cork City".
• "Kilkenny City?" (1x), "Kilkenny Municipal Borough" (2x). Because Kilkenny City is in the barony of Kilkenny, we can probably safely reconcile these entries to just "barony of Kilkenny".
• "Pubblebrien & Municipal Borough" has been reconciled as the baronies of Puddlebrien and the city of Limerick because the parish (St Munchin's) straddles both.
• "Clanwilliam & Municipal Borough", the latter probably for the Municiapl Borough of Limerick, has been reconciled as just "barony of Clanwilliam".

Skipped for now

• Drogheda and Municipal Borough (cf. Ferrard/Drogheda Municipal Borough) - we dp have an entry for the historical 'county of the town of Drogheda', which existed until the end of the 19th century.

To do

Issues

• Cell Chromglaise is given as being in the barony of 'Iffa and Offa' as well as County Waterford.
• The entry on Ballycarry, Co. Antrim, locates it in the barony of Larne (Item:Q466), which is a former, somewhat obscure barony. Reeves cites a source claiming a 'barony of Larne' is "on the border of Dpwn and Armagh". According to townlands.ie, the townland and parish are in Belfast Lower. I went with the latter identification.

• @todo - while linked to counties, which are themselves linked to provinces, it may helpful to link them directly to provinces.
